Well, for us, August means back to school for a fabulous new year! SO today I share two made-its–one new and one overhaul of an oldie-but-goodie.

**Bright Ideas Board Overhaul**

Below is a picture of our Bright Ideas board that I have used in years past. A prompt is written on the white area and students share their thinking on a Post-it note corresponding to their numbers. You can see a math prompt I gave last year. You can also see the diversity of understanding with some thumbs being in the middle to show an inability to decide. Prompts such as these bring with them wonderful discussions and students must justify their thinking–so I wanted to use the board again this year. Although, there were a couple of things I wanted to change. First, the Post-its often curled or did not adhere to the board (especially for the first month of school with the extreme heat and when discussion did not take place immediately after students placed them on the board). Second, the Post-Its did not always give ample room for students to write their thoughts. Since I wanted to eliminate these issues, I did a total overhaul of the board. Using my KNK Zing cutting machine, I cut out brightly-colored cardstock library pouches with numbers. Instead of Post-Its, we will be using note cards. I also used a larger piece of white paper for writing prompts. Check out the new version on the right!

**It’s All About the Numbers!**

For many years I have tossed around the idea of using a Boggle type board, yet I never felt strongly enough about it until now. I decided to use only nine numbers and make various activity sheet options that require using the numbers and discovering relationships in different ways. We will begin the year “getting to know” the board using one-digit numbers and move on to greater numbers. Can’t wait to use them!

These are a just a couple of things that will get the year of to a wonderful start! Have a blog and want to share your math made-its? Feel free to check out the ** Makin’ It Math linky guidelines, **and link up below!

To all–we wish you the best as you begin a new school year!
